Confronting the Obstacles to Inbound Management
Challenge: Before 2008, multiple transportation providers handled a solar power manufacturer’s global inbound freight, but their growth necessitated a more streamlined
process for managing this aspect of their business. Challenges included manual
processes, limited visibility to the entire supply chain, and costly expedited shipments.
Solution: The solar power manufacturer outsourced their global inbound logistics to
C.H. Robinson. By optimizing the supply chain over a variety of freight services, they saw
increased efficiency and identified cost savings. New reporting tools improved visibility,
and a dedicated account management team employed a more strategic approach to continuous process improvement.
Result: They achieved cost savings of 20% to 25% through shipment optimization and
experienced enhanced visibility and reporting through business analytics and the use of
CHRWonline®. Today, C.H. Robinson’s strategic account management coordinates
global shipments from approximately 25 vendors, saving time and serving as their single
source for inbound freight.
Helping Three Disjointed Divisions Become One
Challenge: Resulting from significant growth through acquisition, our client, a Specialty
Food Sales & Marketing firm, was challenged with consolidating three disjointed divisions. Providing customers with a single point of distribution for all product lines was
paramount.
Solution: As the logistics service provider for the largest division, Port Jersey Logistics
worked closely with the client to develop and implement a plan which integrated and
consolidated all three business units. A multi-stage plan was developed to transition one
division at a time. For each, a coordinated effort was staged, bringing new product
directly to our distribution center, depleting a large portion of inventory from the existing
distribution center through attrition, and minimizing the transfer of any remaining inventory.
Results: As a result of our collaborative team efforts, our client realized a quick and
seamless transition—moving from a cumbersome and disconnected supply chain model,
to an integrated and efficient solution.
Consolidation Drives 62% Reduction in
Outbound Freight Costs
Challenge: A mid-market food manufacturer was experiencing high LTL freight costs for
distribution to grocery and mass retail chains. It sought a 3PL partner that could combine
its freight with other companies to move goods in lower-cost truckload volumes.
Solution: KANE took over distribution of the company’s products in the Northeast at our
Scranton, PA distribution center. Our large concentration of CPG customers allows us to
combine retailer orders for multiple manufacturers and deliver them on a single truckload, while hitting all RAD dates. The customer pays only for the portion, by weight, of
the truckload shipment that its products represent.
Results: The customer reports a 62% reduction in CWT for consolidated orders savings
that drop straight to the bottom line. Retailers also benefit by receiving the same volume
of products in fewer, multi-vendor shipments.
